Just a girl and her horse.

Olena has been riding at a new barn for the last 2 months.  She is now in a private lesson verses a group, and they train the girls here to compete.  The class has more structure and requires a lot more commitment and drive from her.  We LOVED Banbury and I miss the staff and our friends there but they were geared at the therapeutic aspect of riding and Olena has the desire to go beyond that.

We've had a good time, we get to spend a lot of time with the horse and getting to know him.  We are responsible for grooming, tacking, bathing...I wasn't exactly the most well liked person in the barn for the first few weeks, (the girls teased it was bc the horses knew I was clueless at what I was doing) I was so kindly nibbled on a few times, took a few harsh nudges to the fanny while trying to pic his hooves clean, and was even blocked in the stall while trying to exit.  But with some practice and a bit more confidence ,I am now the coolest mom.  I come armed with peppermints and horse treats, my grooming and tacking skills are fabulous...well almost, and now my loving friend Jiggers likes to lick me from face to feet when I am around.  It is pretty gross I have to admit! but it has been a pretty neat experience learning about these amazing animals.  I never considered myself afraid of horses, but when all of a sudden you are responsible for coming close and personal with one, having to walk it around, groom it, tack it...they can be rather intimidating.  We getting into the groove.
Here are few pictures from last weeks session.

Notice anything different?

A little accessory for her Aunt Rickie's wedding.  She kept telling us she wanted long hair like us for the wedding but we just never grew it out.  So voila! instant long hair! I do plan to make it look a lot nicer for the wedding.  Literally she walked in from playing in the sprinkler and I shoved it on her head.  Once her real hair is curled it will blend and look more uniform. I am proud at how well I matched the color, I was worried because I ordered it off line.

Being brave the best way she knows how.

Olena has a big issue with getting her nails clipped. This has been a problem since bringing her home and though it has improved a bit in four years, it is still a 45 minute fight just to trim her fingers and toes. She has never been hurt - she just has a problem with it due to her sensory disorder - she is extremely over sensitive when it comes to her feet or hands. I am cutting her nails the other day.... O: do you have to cut the baby one too? M: Yes! O:NNNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOO, not the baby one OK? M: I have to, it's really long O: NNNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOO, its my dragon claw. M: I still have to cut it O: NNNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOO, just leave it ok! Leave them all. I can do it. M: how? you don't know how to use the clippers. O: like this! (as she attempts to put her toes in her mouth and act like she biting the nails off) M: that's just wrong....not to mention disgusting. I need to cut them. Please give me your foot. O: (as nervous as be) just wait a minute.....**big sigh**....(gr
